Week 5 -Spiderman - Journalistic writing
Features of Newspapers |
In this lesson, we will investigate text-type features of a newspaper report. We will then compare two types of newspaper reports - broadsheet and tabloid. Finally, we will label or identify the text-type features, using a model newspaper report as the independent task. |
In this lesson, we will explore the letter strings -ough, -ear, -ou, -au and -ice and the different sounds made by each letter string. 10 spelling words will be explained and set to learn. |

To explore word class |
.In this lesson, we will recap on sentence types: compound, simple and complex. We will then recap on the definitions of the different word class categories. Following this, we will sort words into their word classes and lastly, identify word classes in different sentence types. |
To gather evidence |
In this lesson, we will be starting with writing a complex sentence with a relative clause. Next, we will look at where we would be gathering evidence or information from if we were journalists writing our own newspaper reports. We will then learn how to take notes when gathering information. Lastly, we will practise how to use brackets in sentences. |

In this lesson, we will introduce new vocabulary, identify word pairs and synonyms and apply the vocabulary in sentences. |

In this lesson, we will be investigating the purpose of semicolons and practising how to use them in a list. Then, we will look at an opening of a newspaper report and identify the 5Ws: who, what, where, when and why. |

In this lesson, we will start off by investigating which sentence starters are appropriate for newspaper reports. Then, we will look over our plans from the previous lesson and use them to inform our writing when writing a recount. |
To edit a recount |
In this lesson, we will look at the purpose of editing and why it is important. Then, we will break the editing checklist into two parts: one that checks for punctuation, spelling and sense; and the other for language choices, sentence types and structure. Lesson 10 |
Week 5 Creative Writing Task
Choose a found object or item to use as the inspiration for a short story. It may be something you collected during a nature walk, a food product, a recycled object or a commercial item that you already own. Is it a lost item? What's its story? You could link your story to our sustainabilty topic.

Science -Sustainability
Materials |
In this lesson, we will learn about natural and synthetic materials. We will then investigate the properties and uses of three synthetic materials: glass, ceramics and plastics. |
Recycling |
In this lesson, we will learn about sustainability and what we can do to live more sustainably. We will investigate which common items in our households can and cannot be recycled. |
What is a life cycle? |
In this lesson, we will look at the sustainability of items based on their life cycle assessment and evaluate the use of reusable coffee cups over disposable ones. |
What happens when fuels are burnt? |
In this lesson, we will learn about fuels and how they release energy in combustion reactions. We will also use word equations to describe these reactions. |
What is global warming? |

This week, we will continue to look at the Christian Story of Creation.
Watch the story on You Tube and/or read it in the Bible. You will find the story in the book of Genesis, Chapter 1, and Chapter 2, verses 1-17. You could also read it HERE.
Then, represent the story in your own way. You might...
- Create a cartoon strip
- Re-write the story in your own words
- Draw or paint a scene from the story
- Create a shoebox diorama of an important part of the story
- Make some puppets and ask an adult to film a puppet show of the story that you narrate
- Come up with your own idea!
