Daily English Activities

Over the next two weeks in English, you should try to do some Grammar, some Reading lessons, and some creative writing activities.   Below, I have put enough activities for 2 weeks of work. You can decide which order you complete the work.  You can 'mix and match' over 2 weeks - your choice!  Do one piece of creative writing each week based on the pictures below.

In this lesson, we will be learning about clauses, simple sentences, coordinating conjunctions and compound sentences.

In this unit, we will develop our knowledge of non finite subordinate clauses. We will then practise writing some complex sentences which can be used in our letter writing. In this lesson you will find out the author of the book we will be studying and the name of the book. They will make inferences by looking at the front cover. They will learn some key vocabulary and then read the first couple of paragraphs. All their ideas in this lesson are to be collected on a mind map.

Creative Writing Activities

Week 3

  • Who is this man? Where has he come from? What does his clothing tell you about his character?
  • Do you think he is a good or bad character? Why? What is he doing?
  • Is the bird friendly or is it going to attack him?
  • Describe the tower in as much detail as you can.
  • Why is it called ‘Dark Tower’? What do you think the tower is used for? Does anyone live there? Are there many visitors? What are the red things on the ground and in the air?
  • What sounds could you hear if you were inside the picture?
  • Use this picture as a story prompt. Include the dark tower as a setting, the man as a character and the bird as something else (a sidekick? A villain?).

Week 4

  • What do you think a concierge is? Make a prediction, then check using a dictionary. Were you right? What clues did you use? Is this man real?
  • Why does he have keyholes for eyes? What might he represent?
  • Is he a good or bad character? Why are all of his keys different shapes and sizes?
  • Why is he holding one key? What is it for? What does it unlock?
  • Why are keys interesting objects to include in stories? Can you think of any stories that include a key?
  • Use this selection of images about keys to inspire a story:

Extra English Activities

Fun activity using newspapers and magazines from around the house. Cut up words and phrases to make your own poem. Be creative- have fun.

Monday      What is globalisation?

In this lesson, we will learn all about what is globalisation. We will begin by looking at what globalisation means and then explore the different views on when globalisation began. Finally, we will learn about why transport has been important for globalisation.

In this lesson, we will learn all about where our clothes are made. You will begin by finding out where some of your clothes are made and then we will calculate how far these clothes travel. Finally, we will look at how the fashion industry impacts the environment

In this lesson, we will learn all about what globalisation has to do with food. We will begin by learning about the companies that control many of the world's largest food brands and then will find out what TNCs are. Finally, we will look at the positive and negative impacts of the globalised food industry

In this lesson, we will learn about where our food comes from. We will begin by learning about food miles and then explore why our food comes from so many different countries. Finally, we will learn about the effects of increasing food miles.

Wednesday

In this lesson, we will be reflecting on where globalisation will lead us. We will begin by learning about global inequalities and then explore what the future holds for globalisation. Finally, we will explore whether globalisation has made the world a better place.

Lesson 3

Thursday

In this lesson, we will be thinking about how globalised our daily lives are. We will begin by reflecting on our day-to-day activities and how these are connected to globalisation. Finally, we will be creating a poster displaying how globalisation impacts your day-to-day life.Lesson 4

Friday

 In this lesson we will be writing a script for a short video on globalisation. We will begin by reflecting on how the globalised industries impact your life and how they impact the world. Finally, we will reflect on the positives and negative impacts of globalisation.

RE

This term, Netherfield are focusing on the story of Moses and the Ten Commandments.  

Watch the story on You Tube and/or read it in the Bible. You will find the story in the book of Exodus, Chapter 20, verses 1-17. You could also read it HERE

Then, represent the story in your own way. You might...

  • Create a cartoon strip
  • Re-write the story in your own words
  • Draw or paint a scene from the story
  • Create a shoebox diorama of an important part of the story
  • Make some puppets and ask an adult to film a puppet show of the story that you narrate
  • Come up with your own idea!
